Published as a paperback by Faber in 2008, Zorba The Greek, written by Nikos Kazantzakis, is a surreal and philosophical tale about a young English writer’s experiences when he meets Alexis Zorba.
Set in pre-World War I times, Zorba The Greek follows the life of a young English novelist, who is on a journey to Crete in order to collect an inheritance. Though he initially travels there in a maudlin temper, with an aim to grab the money and get out, he has a chance encounter with the indefatigable and spirited Alexis Zorba. Alexis is a man with a zest for life, an aggressive appetite, a taste for the beauty hidden in the most mundane things, and a magnanimous spirit. Despite initially being at odds, since they are completely different individuals in every regard, Zorba slowly wins over the protagonist, with his profound philosophy, that stems from his experiences with his many lovers, his family (which he loves passionately), and his involvement in fighting the Balkan Wars.
Key Features:
- The book has been adapted into film by the director, Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis, as a British-Greek drama film starring Anthony Quinn as the protagonist, Zorba.
- The book was later adapted into a Broadway musical titled Zorba, in 1968, starring Herschel Bernardi. This was later revived in 1983 with Anthony Quinn again.

Book Description
About the Author
Nikos Kazantzakis is the well-known Greek writer, philosopher, and poet, whose magnum opus was the critically acclaimed novel Zorba The Greek. The book’s resonating success in the late 1900’s was mainly due to the film adaptation of the novel, in the same name, starring Hollywood star Anthony Quinn. Kazantzakis never got to see the book rise to fame, as he died in 1957. His most popular work till date, however, was The Last Temptation Of Christ, which received even greater popularity when it was adapted into the film of the same name by Martin Scorsese in 1988. He has also written numerous plays, essays, and memoirs.

- Reviewed in India on 1 August 2020Verified PurchaseSometimes one is able to do much beyond ... as exemplified by this special book by an almost unknown but brilliant author. It shows way as how to live joyfully and abundantly. How to life your life intensely. Forget about God; just be alive, be abundantly alive. Zorba is a character that leaves lasting impressions on you. No wonder Osho coined a term on him - Zorba the buddha. A read that must not be missed.

- Reviewed in India on 4 October 2016Verified PurchaseWarning: Read this book as a product of its times, which goes for all the books IMO.
The book contains oodles of chauvinism, patriarchy, misogyny, and hatred of books(!).
Anyhow, if you can get past all of that, which was pretty hard for me, the story is pretty simple, idyllic and poignant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Livro muito especial que me passou ideias positivas

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinario.
