About the authors
Mark Twain is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910). He was born and brought up in the American state of Missouri and, because of his father's death, he left school to earn his living when he was only twelve. He was a great adventurer and travelled round America as a printer; prospected for gold and set off for South America to earn his fortune. He returned to become a steam-boat pilot on the Mississippi River, close to where he had grown up. The Civil War put an end to steam-boating and Clemens briefly joined the Confederate army - although the rest of his family were Unionists! He had already tried his hand at newspaper reporting and now became a successful journalist. He started to use the alias Mark Twain during the Civil War and it was under this pen name that he became a famous travel writer. He took the name from his steam-boat days - it was the river pilots' cry to let their men know that the water was two fathoms deep.
Mark Twain was always nostalgic about his childhood and in 1876 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published, based on his own experiences. The book was soon recognised as a work of genius and eight years later the sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published. The great writer Ernest Hemingway claimed that 'All modern literature stems from this one book.'
Mark Twain was soon famous all over the world. He made a fortune from writing and lost it on a typesetter he invented. He then made another fortune and lost it on a bad investment. He was an impulsive, hot-tempered man but was also quite sentimental and superstitious. He was born when Halley's Comet was passing the Earth and always believed he would die when it returned - this is exactly what happened.

- Reviewed in India on 8 August 2021Verified PurchaseThis book written about a hundred and fifty years back is an American classic. The book describes the adventures of teenagers Tom Sawyer and his friend Huck in those good old days.
To confess, I had long ago heard of Tom Sawyer but did not have the chance to read the book. It deserves all the praise heaped on it.
Before you have finished thirty pages, you will have fallen in love with Tom Sawyer. I was again and again reminded of Dennis the Menace! The various adventures, fun and frolic will cast a spell on the reader. Older readers will fondly reminisce about their childhood days.
The writer, Mark Twain displays mastery over the language too – choosing apt slang for the dialogues, and depicting other emotional scenes in superb prose.
Another remarkable thing about the story is that there are enough surprises and twists. This is done so skillfully that the reader may not be even aware of it. A lesson to some of the present-day writers (top) who breathe and growl and groan trying to add twists in their tales at every turn of a chapter (especially the last line).
The last chapter of the book, especially, is simply superb – filled with memorable lines.
If you have not read the book, go grab it.
Five stars all the way.
- Reviewed in India on 4 November 2018Verified PurchaseMy all-time favorite work of fiction. I usually read this every summer.
As a fourth grader I read this book and took it very seriously. It was my dream to build a raft and go adventuring. Actually I did build the raft, but there was not enough water in the creek.
My other great ambition was to come marching into my own funeral. I still think that would be fun.
When I read about Tom taking a licking for Becky Thatcher in school and sharing his cake with her in the cave, I thought that was incredibly chivalrous and how things ought to be. Because I read this book when I was young & before I understood much of the humor, I think it shaped the way I think in many ways.
As an adult, I have re-read this book several times and love its timeless humor. The descriptions of a little kid at church are totally relevant today. I have learned that this book is primarily a light-hearted book written about children, but for adults.

I am also satisfied with it but it had some spelling mistakes like one word is written 2 times or the spelling is not correct but the whole book is intresting and nice 👍🏻🙂
- Reviewed in India on 16 October 2014Verified PurchaseOh! To dare to rate Mark Twain's story! The rating is simply for this edition. I first read this story 55 years ago.. Ever since, I have read it many, many times over in several editions. I read it at least once a year, around my birthday- for Tom seems to be so very much a part of us! In rereading it, we recall to mind the little incidents that peppered our own care-free school days and relive those days!
I have several edtions, all paperbacks (a word I do not like) and hence not durable, often not even readable. The Wilco Classic Library editions are so good- printed on good quality paper, the typeface easy to read, the font size just right, the pages designed well so that they are not cluttered, and are easy on the eye;the book spine-stitched so you can open the book fully withour fear, and beautifully bound- all this brought to you at such an affordable price, which is indeed like a free gift these days! The only shortcoming -if I must point out one- is that it lacks an introduction, but this is really not an issue these days when you get so much material on the Net.I am glad I bought this edition.Amazon made it even more affordable!

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic to pick up again
Verified PurchaseAlthough Twain intended the novel mainly for young readers, it has to be admitted that his literary style and references to contemporary life will make it hard going for today's child reader.
Thousands of adults will enjoy coming back to the work, however, epecially if they have not read it since they were children themselves. What comes over most vividly is a boy's zest for life and adventure, and the freedom that boys apparently enjoyed in that era, and as another reader has pointed out, the degree of superstition among young and old. In this respect, however, one has only to read the earlier novels of Thomas Hardy to appreciate that superstition was equally rampant in England at the same time.
It is not only Twain's ability to create boyish adventure that continues to charm us; it is also his ability to smile at the nature of boys, and to make his readers smile too.
